“Boat Song” by 13 Echoes is their second single of the year. It interweaves a conscientious reflection on the treatment of refugees with captivating storytelling. Recorded at the Highfield Recording Studios in Essex, 13 Echoes features a genius line-up of musicians. We have our vocalist Lily Giles-Donovan, acoustic guitarists Nathan Giles-Donovan and Ian Frazer Smith, and Beth Birss with their accompanying harmonies.
“Boat Song” reflects on the harsh reality refugees face in both the homes they are fleeing and the shelter they are receiving. As they are often fleeing in boats, the song is aptly titled “Boat Song.”
Lily Giles-Donovan is a professional in choral work with experience in musical theatre. She takes center stage in this song. Her voice anchors the refugees with her humane understanding. She delivers a tender and rich performance. Through poetic lyricism, she emphasizes refugees living and dying to “rue the day.” The quote represents the treatment they receive. Her voice carries an emotional but powerful weight that perfectly complements the song’s profound lyrics.
The acoustic guitar work is helmed by Nathan Giles-Donovan and Ian Frazer Smith. The guitar tunes are raw and authentic as are the lyrics and as her the vocals.
“Boat Song” is a beautifully expressed, timely, and evocative social commentary. 13 Echoes blends their individual and combined creative genius with emphatic vocals, and expressive storytelling. All of this, with the courage included, makes “Boat Song” stand out.
