Philippe Mourani, a Montreal-based singer-songwriter and bassist, takes us on an introspective journey through his debut solo project A Draft. Known for his contributions to various bands, Mourani channels his multifaceted musical background in folk, baroque pop, rock, and indie psychedelia into an album that is both haunting and richly layered.
The opening track, “I’m a Draft,” sets a somber tone with shimmering guitar strums and a subtle rhythm section. The harmonized, reverb-laden vocals evoke an expansive sense of solitude, perfectly framing lyrics that delve into the idea of being “incomplete” and “unfinished.”
“Today She Gave Me Roses, Lost and Found” brings a shift in tone. Mourani’s soulful vocals echo over vibrant guitar and bright percussion, conveying a mixture of resignation and yearning. This track, with its rain-soaked imagery and haunting refrain, paints a portrait of someone searching for meaning but feeling perpetually “lost and found.”
“She Deciphers My Heart,” the mood lightens, with catchy drumbeats and vibrant guitar melodies. Mourani’s hypnotic, calm voice reflects newfound happiness as he sings about meeting a soulmate. Lines like “She deciphers my heart with a look/ She is my soul, she is my hook” capture a tender connection, as the lyrics embrace warmth and a sense of completion missing from earlier tracks.
