Germany-based band Coma Beach has returned with a new punk rocking record, A Madman’s Dream/Mind Descending. Released this Aug 4, the EP ruminates with a gnarling existentialism.
A Madman’s Dream/Mind Descending begins with “A Madman’s Dream – Single Version” which introduces the hoarse, raspy, high vocals and the frustrated delivery of B. Kafka, along with ripping shreds of guitar over thumping steady drum beats. The way the vocals howl shrilly over the grinding guitars produces an uplifting vibe. “Mind Descending” brings a more catchy, engaging grind to the hard rock palette. It’s an action-packed 2-minute scather. Its refrain, “I am going insane” might just hit a cord with you.
Attached to the foremost, leading two tracks are the radio edits of the additional three. Coming right after “Mind Descending” is the more relaxing start of “Absurd – Radio Edit.” The guitar in this track has a soothing way of riffing over the softly rustling beats. Here, the vocals find a more sombre and introspective tone. It’s a nice respite from the gnarly leading tracks. Nonetheless, the message is quite strong, as the chorus goes: “I don’t care about what you think since your life is so absurd.”
“I Won’t Listen – Original Version – Radio Edit” is the longest of the tracks and just as grim and snarky with brooding guitars and subtle beats. The coming guitar solo is an entrancing highlight, with the demise of which comes a more momentous rhythm section.
Culminating the EP is “Jesus’ Tears” and its fuzz-laden guitars and pounding drums. Regardless of a sharp, high guitar solo coming through and piercing through the buzz, the wall of sound stays intense, consistent and determined. Coma Beach ensures that A Madman’s Dream/Mind Descending as the finale leaves with a grating sound ringing in our ears.
