Malaysia-born, London-based singer-songwriter and pharmacist trainee Boey returns with his sophomore album Acoustic Space after debuting with Happy. With sincere messages interlaced with emotion throughout, the album draws inspiration from early 2000s pop-RnB influences in 16 tracks.
Acoustic Space opens with “Breathe.” Acoustic guitars strum softly as Boey’s high, tender voice floats over the music. The paced beats ease into the space, complementing the reflective tone of the song. Written from the perspective of war victims living their lives in constant fear, “Breathe” delicately urges listeners to simply breathe to get through tough times.
“Oceans Apart” is for all the long-distance lovers. Boey’s voice glides effortlessly over gentle melodies as he sings reassuringly to the lover that they will make it through these tough times. Female backing vocals further elevate the song with a soothing ethereality.
In contrast to the more melancholic moments on the album, “Eye Contact” brings a lighthearted and playful energy. The snapping fingers set the rhythm, and Boey’s romantic side shines as he sings about the butterflies and excitement of making eye contact with a special someone.
“The Same” has Boey reflecting on unrequited love. Opening with gentle piano melodies, the song explores the pain of longing and wondering whether the other person feels the same.
“Hurt No More” combines engaging rhythms with Boey’s subtle yet powerful vocal performance. While the groove is undeniably catchy, the underlying agony in his voice reflects the struggle of the people who are wretched apart by war.
Listen to Acoustic Space by Boey if you love relaxing music that meets intimacy and vulnerability with conscientious humanity.
