Indie pop duo Giant Killers is back with their latest single, “Around the Blocks,” complete with three tracks packed in its helm. The duo, Jamie Wortley and Michael Brown’s songwriting and musicianship are on full display in this infectious tune.
The title track, “Around the Blocks,” has catchy guitar riffs and thumping drums that engage us in their liveliness. Jamie Wortley, the lead vocalist, sings hookily and catchily with a thick and charismatic voice and creates a storytelling tone, making us hold on to his lyrics. Meanwhile, Michael Brown’s backing vocals provide a spaciousness to the music. He sings, “…So you best hold the one you love/ Though you may not be very good/ You know you get better in the end.” This song tributes our communities while helping you cherish these loved ones for cultivating your identity.
“Normal Service (Will Not Be Resumed)” shimmers with vibrant riffs that create a relaxing soundscape, while the building drums elevate the song with an uplifting rhythm and help us keep up with the flow. The lower-range vocals help balance out the engaging instrumentals with an expansiveness in the space.
Closing with “Fighting in the High Street – Live and Unplugged at The Louisiana, Bristol, 1996,” the song shows layers of strumming guitars producing a realistic realm amidst organic percussion. This live recording of the early performance of the band is an exotic and energetic performance that shows just how different their music used to be and how they have grown since returning to the music scene. The raw and energetic performance also captures the band’s live energy and their grit.
Listen to Around the Blocks by Giant Killers if you have a lot of love for engaging music and your community.
