Upon hearing โBanana Yellow Cloudsโ by J.I. Gassen, I couldnโt help but feel a sense of whimsy and nostalgia wash over me. The track is just over two minutes long and takes listeners on a journey through a dreamy folk and acoustic listening experience.
From the moment the song begins, J.I. Gassenโs hazy voice sets the tone for the entire track. His words seem to swing seamlessly to the following lines without fixating on the syllables. If we look into the content, the lyrics paint a vivid picture of a world filled with bright colors and soft textures, but more specifically, the singer is seeing the โyellow in their every little curve.โ
We also find a sense of Ikigai in Gassenโs music, as he sings of โlosing his mindโ with an atypically positive connotation, as though he wants to escape from the hurly-burly. His singing style enhances the feeling he is trying to portray with his hazy tone, barely holding onto any word he is saying.
The twang in his acoustic guitar and instrumentation perfectly complement this dream-like country atmosphere. And the vocal layering helps create a spacious country atmosphere without any use of vaporous synth. The choir in the back builds on the vision he is portraying, enfolding the instrumentals in a larger-than-life soundscape.
J.I. Gassen, as an artist, decided to give bedroom indie and psychedelic music a spin with his purer and rawer take. Itโs a refreshing sound, to say the least. If Banana Yellow Clouds is something that sounds like it could take you out of the regular humdrum, give it a shot. Swear you wonโt regret it.
