Borderline by IRYS: Review
IRYS, a singer, songwriter, and producer based in Berlin, Germany, has been quickly hailed as one of the most stunning dark pop newcomers internationally since she began her project in 2021. She has been able to do so by enticing fans and critics with her dark persona and remarkable songwriting skills. But, IRYS is forging her own path. She combines the sound authenticity of the Berlin underground with easily irresistible pop hooks to create her own style of dark, edgy electro-pop. She takes a do-it-yourself approach to her job and creates, records, and produces all of her music in her home. The multi-talented artist quickly progressed from songwriting with an acoustic guitar to producing, where she would add drum machines and other electronic instruments to her compositions.
With a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere, and a sweet voice that mimics the autumn breeze IRYS’s track “Borderline” puts listeners at ease. The track has a stellar rhythm section filled with dark and moody bass lines and a beat structure that follows the lofi trend quite well. The artist’s voice is melancholic, heartfelt, and quite edgy in the dark pop presentation. Her sense of rhythm is amazing, and the track is extremely catchy.
“Borderline” has a nice blend of mechanics, such as the faded acoustic guitars that have this minimal but important effect to carry the weight of IRYS’s voice. Aside from that, the synth and bassline portions, especially in the chorus sections sound truly wonderful and as IRYS graces the stage with her hypnotic voice, it is tough to resist the glamor of the track all the while.
