Disguised As A Party by Disco Mary: Review
The indie supergroup Disco Mary gives the listeners a funky soulful taste of the upcoming EP ‘The Wow! Signal’ with their latest single Disguised As A Party.
The underlying theme of the song is how putting on a smile to face reality when things aren’t really going your way can help you get through and also how there’s a societal expectation of doing so. The Stoic wisdom of the obstacle being the way and charging head first into the eye of the storm to show it what you’re really made of is wrapped up in a funky soulful package in this song.
The musical arrangement of the song beautifully complements its theme. Mixing elements of RnB, soul, indie and electronica, the song is very percussion-heavy with the funky drums being one of the main driving forces. As Kev Sherry takes the vocal lead, his vocal lines are accompanied by harmonizing bass. The Bass driven vocal melodies continue on the chorus part with Charly Haze singing in falsetto. The brass instruments, keyboard rhythms, and electronic samples give the song a slight kick of psychedelia that may remind some listeners of Gorillaz’ Demon Days or The Now Now era. How the band incorporates elements of soul and nu-psychedelia along with the ongoing onslaught of funk is musical innovation at its peak. It’s a fun and upbeat track that you can turn to when things aren’t really going your way.
