JRTA gets gritty and experimental in his latest electropop EP, Down Shiftin. Recorded in his 11th-floor studio apartment using Ableton Live, JRTA plays all instruments—bass, guitar, keyboard (to some extent), and digital production—creating an entirely self-produced sonic landscape. Anyone who loves Morphine, The Doors, Q-Tip, Portishead, and Mouse on Mars is highly encouraged to check him out.
The title track sets the tone for the EP with a sharp, high-distortion glitch that electrifies the atmosphere over catchy beats. JRTA’s charismatic and raspy high vocals drive the track, delivering a message of resilience and chasing dreams despite everything. The song represents the power of persistence while defying the limitations that time and doubt often impose.
“One More Toke” opens with a pulsating screech combined with an infectious beat. JRTA’s high, airy voice, bathed in reverb, lingers over the beat, bringing a calming entrance as he sings slowly. The song manages to be laid-back while maintaining an energy that pulls the listener in, creating a soothing escape.
Carrying the beat to “Say That You Need Me” shifts into a more emotional space. The track opens with tantalizing, seductive lines and builds towards a chorus where he desires for love and reassurance, driven by a smooth and swooning melody.
The final track, “Bass Bugs,” takes a more robotic and mechanical approach, as it opens with mecha over the buzzing electric glitch. JRTA’s, with his reverbed voice, sings catchily. This track feels futuristic and playful and has this unique, sci-fi-like atmosphere that closes the EP on an energetic note.
Listen to JRTA’s Down Shiftin to perceive different flavors of electropop and ride both emotions and vibes.
