Luxembourg singer-songwriter Jeremy Engel delivers a poignant and intimate new single, “Escape Game,” released just this September 20. Even though his folk melodies are inspired by Damien Rice, Rory Gallagher, and Glen Hansard, Engel’s latest track brings mesmerizing sound and lyrics to the forefront in a way that has never been done before.
“Escape Game” opens with a catchy rhythm, where the rhythm of clapping hands blends with the grandness of soothing strings and delicate guitar riffs churning and turning, creating a soundscape that is as uplifting as it is emotive. Engel’s soft and tender voice immediately draws listeners in. There is such intimacy in his voice that you can hear his breaths falling and heaving. His vocal performance is so touching and vulnerable yet powerful and vivid that makes it easy for listeners to get lost in the track’s atmosphere.
A standout feature is the string solo in the bridge, which adds a romantic and soulful element to the song. The way the strings rise and fall, writhing with emotion, gives “Escape Game” depth and beauty. Alongside this, the rhythmic clapping hands and subtle percussion create an organic pulse that keeps the listener engaged, nodding their heads to the beat.
Lyrically, “Escape Game” delves into despair, beauty, and the inevitable cyclical nature of life with imagery of moonlight, shadows, and memories. The melancholy produces a sort of beauty ingrained within its folds that shows us that life is more so, meant to be lived and felt than to be sought purpose and meaning from, because perhaps what we perceive as we feel is more important than what we find.
As both a conference interpreter for the United Nations and a musician, Jeremy Engel bridges two very different worlds, but it’s clear that he leads a life with both purpose and passion. Listen to “Escape Game” on Spotify.
