F.O.M.O by Tarn PK captures the mental static of modern life, through burnout, self-comparison, and existential fatigue. Across six tracks, the Wellington-based producer and singer-songwriter lives in the constant fear of missing out, circles it, and finally exhales into something like peace.
The opening track and namesake, โF.O.M.Oโ, has the beats rumbling and bustling with the glitchy synths buzzing beneath Tarnโs vulnerable, breathy vocals. Itโs a song about feeling stuck while watching everyone else speed past, which he expresses introspectively with poetic lyrics.
Then comes the favorite amongst listeners, once featured in Best New Zealand Music of the week, the EPโs first single, โCry Baby.โ It leans into irony and introspection. The drums smack confidently, but Tarn sings with a laid-back resignation, his vocals trailing like someone whoโs both fed up and unsure if theyโre allowed to be. The cool and effortless chorus soars, underneath which the overthinking young mind spirals through the digital noise. Thereโs a genius here in how nonchalant the song sounds while cracking under its own emotional weight.
But the real revelation is โComfy,โ the final track. Here, the EP finds its emotional anchor. The beat is laid-back yet infectious, and his vocals come clear, like heโs found stillness after the storm. Horns and glimmering textures fill out the soundscape, but the heart of the song lies in its simplicity: โIf youโre comfy with me, then Iโll be comfy with you.โ Itโs the closure this collection needs, with just a moment of presence, of ease.
โF.O.M.Oโ goes from yearning to acceptance. Stay tuned to Tarn PK if you canโt get over his voice.
