Yodashe sonically shows us how to manifest euphoria and joy amidst a rising existential crisis in her latest single, “FAM.” The second release from her upcoming self-produced debut album, “FAM,” is innovative and deeply meaningful.
“FAM” carries a dual meaning as it refers to the vibrant music-making community at Yodashe’s institution, Goldsmiths University, as a family while phonetically hinting at the French word for “woman.”
The song unfolds with fuzzy beats which drive it forward amidst swirling, erratic synths, creating an enigmatic distortion alongside a spoken word monologue in French. The verses “Je crois qu’on n’existe pas” (I believe we don’t exist) and “J’ai peur d’être en bas” (I’m afraid of being down) portray apprehension. But this only pushes through dynamic contrasts in the chorus, centralizing positivity in the composition.
The sultry and exhilarating transformation in the chorus turns the song into an energetic anthem, with pounding drums provided by fellow Goldsmiths alumni Diego Torres-Cantu. Feminine vocals enter the fray and surprise you with sensual and breathy melodies. The lyrics stop you in your tracks of doubt and fear and tell you that this time will be gone soon, so live and love life while you have it.
The seamless juxtaposition of the spoken word and the pop chorus shows us how to defeat negativity and seize the moment.
Listen to ‘FAM” by Yodashe on all major streaming platforms to live life never before.
