Alpha Neutral’s latest single, “Flow down the River,” is fluid, vibrant, and brimming with motion. The South West London trio has never been easy to pin down genre-wise, and this release just drives that point home even more. Fusing reggae’s rhythmic bounce with soulful pop hooks, the track flows with an ease that belies the grit behind it.
The band, Matt Barry, Jeb Holroyd, and Annabelle Hawker, drew directly from their real-life trials for this one: divorce, eviction, homelessness, single parenthood, and all the curveballs that come with trying to keep a dream alive in London’s relentless grind.
The reggae rhythm pulses with warmth, layered with sparkly, jittery percussion that feels like a heartbeat refusing to slow down. And then there’s Annabelle’s deep, rich, and textured voice, like aged wood, that tells stories with both bite and beauty. Her delivery comes like she’s letting you in on a secret while inviting you to dance through the pain.
The trio’s chemistry is undeniable, sharpened by years of collaboration in studios and sheds alike. From Matt’s time engineering at RAK Studios to Jeb’s days with Hot Cuisine and Maroon Town, and Annabelle’s years as a session vocalist, they bring a seasoned touch to every beat. Their past tracks like “Too Posh” and “Why Do You Hurt Me” already hinted at their range, but “Flow down the River” feels like a new level.
With their second album Elements on the horizon, this single feels like a teaser of even richer things to come. Stay tuned and check out “Flow down the River” on Spotify.
