โFumesโ is the latest single from HorthWorld, the project of Derbyshire singer-songwriter Andrew Horth, and it comes charged with sleepless energy and indie-rock warmth. Written about the real-life push-pull of chasing big dreams while juggling full-time work and a relationship, the track captures that delirious stage where exhaustion and affection blur together.
Andrew and his wife, Mairead, barely get the time to rest, yet when they do find a spare hour, theyโd rather spend it together than sleep โ even if it means waking up the next day running on empty again. The song was recorded, mixed, and mastered in just six hours at RatCat Studios with producer Natt Webb (Alt Blk Era, The Struts), whose creative input helped shape the final version.
The track kicks in with driving guitars and bright and punchy pounding drums, which instantly recalls Sam Fender and early Biffy Clyro. Thereโs a rush to the rhythm, like the musical equivalent of trying to stay awake past 3AM โ adrenaline replacing rest. Andrewโs vocals come in laid-back and airy, a dreamy ease to his tone even as the lyrics describe pure tiredness. The hook hits quickly, as he sings, โYouโre running on fumes / Iโm running on empty.โ Itโs catchy, simple, but delivered with a glow of fond exasperation, itโs like the honeymoon period, when you stay up and giggle together while rubbing sleep from your eyesโbut the gushing, exhilarating sweetness extended and retained through the years.
As the song moves, the guitars tighten, the drums lift, and subtle key changes add a sense of motion, like momentum never quite letting up. Itโs just embodying two people choosing each other, even when theyโre too tired to think straight.
โFumesโ feels like late-night laughter, messy hair, takeaway dinners, and knowing glances. Itโs upbeat, affectionate, and irresistibly human, which reminds us that sometimes love is the thing worth losing sleep for.
