Zack Morris is ready to tug at heartstrings with his brand-new single “Good Enough,” which dropped this August 22. The Nashville-based singer-songwriter has already made waves with releases like “What If” and “Bottle It Up,” and even shared the stage with Warner artist MAX. Now, he leans into his pop-folk sensibilities with a track that’s both cinematic and vulnerable, threading his personal struggles with a universal yearning to be, well, enough.
The song opens tenderly, with gentle acoustic strums floating over a soothing piano bed, like the calm before an emotional storm. Morris’s soft and high voice sings very gently, expressing his vulnerability openly, the weariness evident in his voice, as though he’s letting the listener peek into his private journal. Then the drums roll in, grounding the track. It hit me when his vocals soared, swelling with intensity as he sang, “Why do I try to hold on so tight? If I let go, I will be fine.” I am sure a lot of people have questioned the whole point of doing so much or trying so hard for others or themselves, only for them to be overwhelmed.
As the song goes on, the arrangement grows richer as layered harmonies rise like waves, warm and melodic electric guitars shimmer into a moving solo, like a heartfelt sigh after holding your breath too long. The cinematic lift makes you picture headlights on an empty highway or that moment when you finally decide to let go of the weight you’ve been carrying.
Lyrically, “Good Enough” lays it all bare, all of Morris’s anxiety, self-doubt, the endless cycle of trying and stumbling, yet still clinging to hope. Not just for him, but for many of us, it definitely often comes like the line, “It comes in like a wave pulling me under,” before passing onto the next phase, where your death drive kicks in and your survival mode gets started up, just like when he sings, “maybe I’ll be good enough this time,” coming out more perseverent by the end of the day.
Listen to Zack Morris’s very relatable “Good Enough” on Spotify.
