Florida’s Once Great Estate is back with a new album, Goodbye Cody Scarp and it’s a hauntingly beautiful experience. Fronted by the award-winning songwriter Tracy Horenbein, this band takes alt-country and injects it with a dose of dark Americana, creating an upbeat haunting.
The opening track, “Ghosts” features shaking percussion and a lazy line that lays the foundation for a haunting soundscape. Then, Horenbein’s breathy vocals float in, airy and cold, singing, “My head is full of ghosts, but I miss you the most.”
The title track, “Goodbye Cody Scarp,” is a toe-tapper with a dark edge. Horenbein’s voice takes center stage here, sharp and clear as she delivers catchy lyrics. The jangly guitars and steady beat keep you hooked, while the lyrics immerse you in her world.
“Rainbow in the Sky” offers respite as Horenbein’s voice relaxes, becoming more intimate and upfront, as she draws you in with surreal imagery and descriptive lyrics. Goodbye Cody Scarp’s longest track, “Right Outside Your Door,” is a powerful six-minute revenge story on domestic violence. Haunting wails echo over shimmering guitars and a relentless drumbeat. Horenbein’s storytelling shines here, as she delves into the desperation and resilience of a victim trapped in an abusive relationship, who later poisons him.
Listen to the haunting and intriguing Goodbye Cody Scarp by the talented Tracy Horenbein if you love music that tells evocative and profound stories.
