“Grave” by DayEyez settles heavy in your chest. Dropping August 15, 2025, it’s the last pre-release before the debut album Mid Love Crisis arrives this October. Based in Nelson, New Zealand, DayEyez is an alt-rock/pop force that blends raw lyricism with AI-driven soundscapes, drawing inspiration from bands like Linkin Park and Imagine Dragons (my favorite!). With “Grave,” frontman Shaun trades the easy temptation of a breakup anthem for a funeral for a love that’s already dead.
Right from the jump, the track leans into its cinematic weight. The drums thump steadily, relentless like a heartbeat that won’t let go, while gritty guitars roar and spiral above, pulling you deeper into the storm. Shaun’s husky voice, almost frayed at the edges, comes through with passion and anguish that came from scars still fresh, reflecting all that the couple went through, and how it all ended. After everything said and done, it’s the little love they had for each other that is painful to let go. When the chorus hits, “So I let you down one more time / I never had much of a spine,” he shows he’s acknowledging everything wrong that he might have done.
As the verses unravel, burial imagery threads the narrative together, with shovels, rain, dirt on coffins, each metaphor driving home the theme of closure. The arrangement swells and crashes like a storm tide, keeping the listener hooked until the final, devastating refrain fades out.
At the end of the day, “Grave” is the exhale after holding your breath for too long. A fitting farewell, and a striking preview of Mid Love Crisis.
