Kato the Younger gets us reeling in contagious pop music as he holds onto toxicity in his latest single, “How Can I Let You Go.”
Released this March 30, this track projects the singer-songwriter Kenny Kato’s dire introspections through film noir lyricism and musicality broadly inspired by Eagles, Jimmy Eat World, and The 1975.
The song opens with infectious guitar riffs driving the melody over a tapping percussion. The guitars chime dreamily as the drums steadily fall and build momentum, creating a dynamic and hooky pop rhythm. Kato’s vocals emerge, singing the verse slowly and hushedly, portraying a sense of secrecy and guardedness as the narrator tries to hide the unhealthy dynamics from others to avoid judgment and rumor.
The chorus comes with his voice soaring with frustration, asking, “How can I let you go?” This recurring refrain captures the narrator’s inner turmoil, torn between the desire to hold onto the relationship despite its toxicity and the realization that it’s unraveling beyond repair.
Throughout the song, Kato’s lyrics portray the guarded narrator getting more frustrated as the circumstances deteriorate.
With his latest single, Kato once again shows us how invested he is in music now that he has spiraled back to it since the pandemic, for good.
“How Can I Let You Go” is only the beginning of an exciting chapter in Kato the Younger’s musical journey. He has a slew of releases coming up. So stay in the loop.
