David D’Angelo’s single “I.M.O.W” (In My Own World), featuring vocals of Chloe Jean and violin of David Scott, creates a soulful, introspective track that reflects the isolation and self-discovery brought on by heartbreak and pandemic.
The song opens with swooning guitar melodies and shimmering keyboard rhythms, setting the stage for an entrancing electronic, Lofi hip-hop, and chill-pop vibe. Chloe Jean’s high voice comes entrancingly relaxing as they sing slowly and softly, but steadily like a still body of water, glistening in the open. The bridge comes with a swelling and soothing violin line by David Scott Binanay, which writhes to the rhythm and enhances the pitch and tone of the melody. The atmosphere has this palpable emotional resonance, which complements the isolation and self-reflection of the lyrics.
Written during David D’Angelo’s move to San Francisco, “I.M.O.W” captures the essence of processing change while finding themselves changed, lost then found in their own world.
The accompanying music video, directed by Shay Stifelman, showcases D’Angelo playing his instruments as he dips further into the water, signifying the overwhelming isolation while also demonstrating just how interconnected we are with nature without even realizing it.
Listen to the standout meditative track “I.M.O.W” from D’Angelo’s album In My Own World to finally zone into your own headspace.
