Australian band Supahoney’s latest and last single, “I Wish,” from their upcoming sophomore album has finally been released this September 6. Giving a modern touch to the Britpop ballads and shoegaze on the track, we have Supahoney going all out with Sydney-based string players Jenny McCullagh, Lily Innis, and Aidan Filshie.
“I Wish” begins with melodic, understated guitar riffs that serve as a gentle introduction, allowing frontman Dylan Wallace’s soft, ethereal voice to take center stage. His vocal delivery feels fragile and intimate, setting a tender mood as the immersive, ambient soundscape builds. As the chorus arrives, Wallace’s voice becomes more heartwarming and tender, getting even more laid-back in a sort of despondent way, which brings a hopeless romantic resonance to the music, because you know that really speaks to the context.
The bridge marks a turning point, with the drums dropping and the rhythm shifting. This change adds momentum, while the heavy strings beneath the guitars amplify the sincerity of Wallace’s lyrical confession. As the song reaches its climax, gritty and punk-infused guitars burst forth alongside powerful drum strikes. The strings swell dramatically, adding layers of depth to the final emotional crescendo, musically representing a heartfelt confession with the cathartic instrumental wall of sound.
With the mix of intimacy and grandeur of “I Wish,” Supahoney leaves us staggering for the upcoming full-length album. Mark your calendars, because it’s coming out this October 13!
