German punk rockers Coma Beach are back with a vengeance in their latest EP, I Won’t Listen.
I Won’t Listen kicks off with the title track, a slow burn that erupts into a wall of guitars and pounding drums. B. Kafka, Coma Beach’s frontman, enters with his signature gravelly growl, dripping with defiance.
“The Past of the Future” doesn’t waste any time, throwing you straight into a mosh pit with its blazing riffs, manic drumming, and sparks of cymbals pulsing through. It’s a raw, untamed beast of a song with the gravelly and hoarse voice of B. Kafka raging with madness.
Then comes “Passion,” a surprising shift in gears. The song opens with a gentle guitar melody offering a brief moment of calm before the storm. Kafka’s voice soon emerges, this time coming off more sensual and emotional. The guitar weaves an eerie trailing tune that wails its way out only to find the singer more introspective. The guitar riffs become more insistent. And so does his surging and provoked voice as he keeps asking, “Where is my passion?”
Coma Beach closes out the EP with “Another Song,” a high-energy, catchy, and cynical punk rocker. The jangly guitars and thumping drums along with backing vocals in between Kafka’s rapid-fire rhyming lyrics bring the best of punk-powered grit.
The band sings about depressing and morbid topics a lot. They also allude to existentialist philosophy, literary works, and authors especially Samuel Beckett, Douglas Adams, William Shakespeare, and Arthur Schopenhauer. Love that? Then hop in. If you also like the Sex Pistols, The Ramones, or bands who are on the darker side of life, then I Won’t Listen is a must-listen.
