In My Head by JShell: Album Review
‘In My Head’, the latest album by the New York City singer-songwriter multi-instrumentalist artist JShell is an audio-visual collection of 15 songs featuring the legends of rock n roll that inspired us to pick up the six strings and pour our hearts out.
In the process of making the album, JShell has brought together some of the best musicians in the industry that he and some of us have looked up to for inspiration. The album features Steve Hackett from Genesis, Jake Cinninger from Umphrey’s McGee, Scott Metzger and Katie Jacoby of the orchestra for The Who. Joining forces on this star-studded album, JShell created a compilation of songs that is unmistakably rock n roll with a heavy dash of prog.
Call me biased but to me, ‘You Do You’ was my favorite of the bunch. It felt like a genesis song that never got released. ‘Chain of Events’ featuring Jake Cinninger is another highlight of the album that takes you back to the 70s prog scene with its trippy synth melodies and sweeping vocals. ‘That’s the Key’ features Katie Jacoby’s virtuosic violins along with energetic rhythms and complex time signatures. Marching on with fuzzy guitars comes along the title track of the album ‘In My Head’. The song features Marissa Wildwood on guest vocals and the duo shows great chemistry. The album brings back Katie Jacoby and The New York Soulful Singers one last time for ‘Meant to Be’ before ‘My Last Request’ and concludes with Big Apple Boogie (Reprise). This album is a must-listen for fans of classic rock and prog.
