London alt-rock/post-punk trio SickRichard kick the door down and demand answers from the void. Their new single โIn The Dark,โ released on 14 November, is a central pillar of the upcoming debut LP Must Be Something Missing. A gritty and gripping descent into addiction, self-loathing, and the hollowness that sticks like tar in the chest when the high wears off.
Produced at Oxfordโs Courtyard Studios by Ian Davenport alongside the band, and mastered by underground legend Kramer, the single crawls out of the shadows on deep-churning guitars and thumping drums that feel like a heartbeat trying not to flatline. The vocal comes in low and grim, haunted yet defiant, as the narrator confesses heโs โrunning on emptyโ while desperately searching for something, anything, to fill the crater inside him. He comes numb, only to go straining and sharp, finally realizing the light at the end of the tunnel might just be fire.
As the track unfolds, spiky guitar grime and mechanical synth whirr tighten the walls, turning the sonic space into a claustrophobic maze. The song teeters between industrial-dark ambience and explosive alt-rock outbursts, reflecting the endless cycle of craving: give me more, give me more. When the singer erupts into the repeated main refrain,ย โMust be something missing,โ the words hit like a brick to the gut: a revelation wrapped in denial, a plea disguised as a sneer.
By the time the final cry fades, โIn The Darkโ leaves you rattled, wired, and peering into the same black hole the band is staring down. Itโs post-punk tension with melodic teeth โ perfect for fans who like their music atmospheric, their hooks sharp, and their truth ugly and honest.
SickRichard hit The Finsbury on 7 December โ and if the stage takes as much damage as this track does, Londonโs in for one hell of a night.
