If you love introspective lyrics and an alternative rock sound, “In The Underground” by Ali Rice might hit close to home, especially if you have had a relationship with a communication barrier or had personal issues that affected the other person. For Ali Rice, this was the case with his parents, where he couldn’t be there during a difficult time of their lives due to his own affairs.
He portrays the situation in a soulful and endearing way as his voice soars into the sky, singing, “Unconfined we roam/While you stand alone,” as though he is letting his loved one go on struggling all alone. Rice depicts an dramatic irony within his lyrics, “For a time I gave my solace for your tears/ Cause you’ve always done the same with me for years.” The amount of self-reflection and guilt that Rice possesses within his lyrics, made twice as emphatic with his flawlessly emotive delivery, is bound to touch you or at least make you feel heard.
Behind his smooth and heartfelt delivery lie heavy guitar riffs, adjoined with drumming sounds in the back, that aid in incrementing the level of frustration conveyed through the music. The production is well-balanced, allowing the vocals to shine without overpowering the instrumentals.
Ali says he’s been inspired by Kings of Leon, The 1975, and Sam Fender to produce such a sound where there are elements of rock but the sound is true to the alternative indie-pop genre.
Show this sincere rising singer and songwriter, Ali Rice, some love by listening to his song, “In The Underground.”
