New York’s rising stars, SAMSARA., take a deep dive into retrospection with their latest grungey but introspective alternative rock single, “IN TOO DEEP.”
“IN TOO DEEP” broods with revving guitars against sparkling cymbals that turn exhilarating when quickly met by a shimmering riffing guitar drive. Drummer Ben Bustamante lays down a solid foundation with thumping drums grounding our ears and attention from behind, while bassist John Devito keeps the groove thick and pulsating. Vocalist Dylan Trif gets the emotions flowing with his rich blend of vulnerability and power.
The lyrics portray the character being drawn to a new love, yet haunted by the ghosts of a past relationship. Trif’s voice sounds agonized as he sings, “I don’t wanna go back to the old me,” but the ghost of his past proves too strong even when a new love is standing right beside him. There is a subtle defeat in his voice as he trails it while surrendering to his trauma and letting himself fall “into deep.”
The official video, directed by Nick Sossi Romano, perfectly complements the song’s mood. Scenes of the band playing amidst fallen leaves in the woods are such a nice touch. It tells us the setting was during the fall season, which is even cooler because it symbolizes the protagonist’s emotional “fall.” The contrasting shots of them walking the cold streets bring the urban vibe. They look like they are having fun making this music. SAMSARA.’s passion for music speaks for itself in the superb efforts on the music video because the editing is sharp.
Catch SAMSARA. live this summer on their “Karmic Wonderland” tour across the Northeast. Till then, feast on “IN TOO DEEP.”
