Mort Jardin has released his latest album, Incidentals from the Dead Garden this Aug 2. Moody, fuzzy and aesthetic, the 10-track album is the product of the artist’s visualization of pulp novel setting.
“Double Drop” commences Incidentals from the Dead Garden with a mysterious heaviness weighing down the song as the guitars roil and the cymbals smack sharply throughout hypnotically. The music further broods fuzzily in “Winter Flies,” where the electric guitars pluck highly, sending vibrations of chords amidst the haze and creating a complex, psychedelic aural field.
“Traitor Moth” is more catchy and hard-hitting as the drums get propulsive with the beats. They thump hard and fast, while the guitar grittily bends and grazes hookily, having us ride out a hypnotic rhythm. On the other hand, “Dioline” turns out to be very dynamic. Although it has a mellow and moody start, the riffs start sizzling and swerving with more vigor later on. And the drums thump like a persistent heartbeat. It’s got a nice wave with high highs and low lows to surf along to.
Incidentals from the Dead Garden concludes with the playful and flirty “Aliah.” As we are absorbed in layers, one layer with its hard beats and rhythm gets us swaying and head-nodding while the gritty fuzz of the other layer drowns our sensations.
