New York-based composer and pianist Nick Marks delivers his last release of 2024 with “Into The Void,” a dynamic prelude to his upcoming Cinematic Chromatics Vol. III EP, set to complete his acclaimed trilogy in early 2025. Blending elements of cinematic funk, R&B, orchestral textures, and jazz, Marks creates a multi-dimensional listening experience that immerses and exhilarates.
“Into The Void” opens with ethereal vocalizations from Arta Jēkabsone, surrounded by shimmering piano and lush, orchestral, and synthesizer textures that rise into an immersive soundscape. As the drums, programmed by Doron Lev, drop in, they anchor the evolving energy with steady, rhythmic beats. Jēkabsone’s rich and soothing vocals weave through the composition, bending like cinematic flourishes before gracefully fading into the instrumental spotlight.
A standout moment comes when Sarpay Özçagatay’s flute snakes through the soundscape and before you know it its airy tones get exchanged for a funk-driven horn section featuring Andrew Gould. His bold, brassy contribution evokes a luxurious, vibrant mood, amplifying the track’s lounge-like richness over the beats. Marks’ piano solo in the outro, backed by a neo-soul groove, offers a reflective close, further cementing the song’s layered complexity.
Across the Cinematic Chromatics trilogy, Marks has been praised for his ability to traverse diverse musical terrains. “Into The Void” exemplifies Marks’ mastery of mood and tone, delivering a cinematic journey that resonates with casual listeners and aficionados of genre-defying soundscapes.
