São Paulo artist Child of SP pours his heart out and shows us how to tackle long-distance relationships with his latest single, “Issues,” If you love hip-hop, soul, or R&B, this song might be for you.
“Issues” opens with a melancholic yet sultry atmosphere. Muffled vocals, laced with emotion, intertwine with a glitchy, buzzing interlude that sweeps it off. As the soft beats drop, a wave of immersion washes over the listener. Child of SP’s voice, deep, thick, and brimming with passion, takes center stage. He delivers his lyrics smoothly as his emotions guide him effortlessly from line to line. Breathtaking pauses and vulnerable croons touch on the vulnerability while catchily complementing the rhythm.
As he sings, he portrays how his love is barely grappling with distance. He bares out the difficulty in lines, “Don’t rush, get rest, high up in the sky/Enjoy the flight, send a text when u arrive” which emphasizes the enduring connection between two people. The chorus, a soulful refrain of “We got some issues/Issues/But my heart ain’t here for misuse/So issues/Are just issues/But we can work it out,” goes out to show how much he’s committed.
The music video, directed by Peter Moutinho, aesthetically supports the passionate context. Shot with cuts between soft lighting and monochrome, it follows Child of SP and his partner navigating a city. The passing train becomes a metaphor for the opportunity that has slipped away, yet the video ends on a hopeful note. We find that love endures.
