Anacy delivers a breathtakingly vulnerable offering with It’s Not You, a genre-blending electro-pop ballad that dives headfirst into the emotional architecture of avoidant attachment. The Cape Town-based artist trades surface-level pop for something far more intimate in her latest track. Produced at Bombsquad Studios under the guidance of Mpho Mantyi, the song has come out cinematic and soul-baring.
The song opens with a melancholic string arrangement and an immersive soundscape that immediately pulls the listener into a mood of introspective longing. A ghostly piano echoes in the distance before Anacy’s husky, delicate voice slips in, singing slowly, almost cautiously, as if she’s weighing every word against old wounds. Her tone is calm but full of shadows, and as she sings “But I knew it from the moment we met that I’d be the love that you’d learn to regret,” you feel the weight of a heart that’s offering and retracting love in the same breath.
As the track progresses, a pulsing beat enters, pushing the tempo just enough to build urgency, but never overwhelming the atmosphere. The song becomes a storm, where cinematic textures swirl, haunting harmonies float in and out like thoughts we try not to think, and each lyrical line hits like a realization mid-conversation. “Can’t be controlled, submit defeat—it’s only fun in your fantasy,” she sings with a weary defiance, confronting the listener with the uncomfortable truth of her emotional boundaries set for survival, which many of us has built in, in our systems.
This sad pop song has become a mirror for anyone who has ever built walls to feel safe, even if it meant keeping love out. Check it out on Spotify.
