Jean Tan released enthralling new song ‘Hatin’ On Ok’
The second of several singles leading up to the release of an EP in the summer of 2023, Singaporean singer-songwriter Jean Tan ushers in the new year with the bop of a single, ‘Hatin’ On Ok’. The song, which will be released on 3 February 2023 via Believe Music and LEEWAY, was co-written by renowned musician Linying and renowned producer Josh Wei, who has worked with many artists including Rachel Platten, Gentle Bones, and K-pop star CL.
The song ‘Hatin’ On Ok’ is inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic and the state of uncertainty it has left the world in and discusses the rarely-discussed disappointments one feels after coming out of a turbulent season. What do we do when our initial aspirations and hopes quickly fade and we realize that everything is still vanilla, mediocre, or just okay? How do we overcome the same difficulties with renewed vigor, especially when it seems like the days ahead will be mediocre and mundane?
The appropriate musical arrangement goes along with the straightforward but profound lyrical sentiments. It’s a hopeful shrug of a song thanks to the fusion of smooth R&B bass grooves, catchy vocal runs, and summery pop vibes. ‘Hatin’ on Ok’ reminds us that the secret to happiness is simply learning to be content rather than necessarily looking for happier pastures. The song is brought to life by Jean’s distinctive, buttery-smooth vocals.
