Mia Loucks’ latest EP, Light It Can Blind You, is an intimate exploration of resilience and self-reflection. Released on October 25, 2024, this self-produced collection brings Loucks’ DIY approach to life, recorded entirely from her bedroom during a challenging summer. Her influences—Elliot Smith, Leonard Cohen, and PJ Harvey—shine through, blending dark, introspective lyrics with a soft, minimalist sound.
The title track, “Light it Can Blind You,” opens the EP with a delicate layering of clear guitar chords and Loucks’ breathy, ethereal vocals, creating a hauntingly beautiful soundscape. She lyrically delves into accepting fleeting happiness and letting life cast its shadows only to lift it to light again.
The next track, “Alive,” features hushed guitar riffs that gradually intensify, paired with Loucks’ haunting vocals singing the chorus, “Is it wrong what is right? Oh it makes you feel alive.” The drums drop in during the bridge, building to a crescendo of gritty riffs that give the track an edgy, raw energy. Loucks’ voice soars above it all, providing a cathartic release.
Closing with “Ricochet,” Loucks creates a dreamy, uplifting atmosphere with harmonies that echo like springtime. Her vocals uplift listeners as they blend with enchanting melodies, exuding a hopeful, fresh tone. This track feels like a reprieve, offering moments of light after the introspection of the previous songs.
