Indie band Paul Babe mixes two songs, Poley Bonaparte (Your Feeling) and “Crownin’ On,” from their debut album in their music video, “Love is Way Too Hard.” The soft psychedelia and indie melancholy in the music carry us through the lifeline of a relationship with love, excitement, and heartbreak.
“Love is Way Too Hard…” opens with soft, high, and charismatic vocals from Seth Evans, who sings soulfully over gentle and calming tunes. His voice is slow, smooth, and intimate, setting a nostalgic and warm tone. The opening is a close-up of love’s excitement. As the song progresses, the music builds with a rumbling, fuzzy pulse that contrasts with the soft beginning. The rhythm grows more disoriented and atmospheric, adding to the tension as the euphoric emotions of love start to unravel.
The track floats into a strange, soft ambience in the second half, mirroring the shift from the excitement of love to the heartbreak following the breakup. Evans’ vulnerable lyrics capture the pain of disappointment and lost hope, particularly in the poignant closing lines: “Cause I am still shaken up by breaking up/And they wonder why/They wonder why/’Cause you were what I was/’Cause you were what I was counting on.”
The music video, with blue color grading, creates a cold, distant but aesthetic urban atmosphere. The visuals depict someone watching another person through a screen late at night, symbolizing a kind of disconnected observation of their relationship’s rise and fall. As the video progresses, we shift our focus to the screen, where the person being watched is heartbroken and disappointed, in his bed. This amalgamation catches the whole concept of love in just a few minutes.
