Tshikombani, Venda-born, and Evaton North-based, Gospel singer-songwriter Job Madilonga’s latest album, Makarapapa, tributes his sister, Lebowani Madilonga, and gospel icon Oleseng Shuping. Crafted over four years, Makarapapa blends personal narratives with musical excellence, underscoring his dedication to God and humanity.
Makarapapa opens with “Tsoha Ntate,” a vibrant and uplifting track. Job’s thick, sonorous vocals are steeped in joy, resonating with meditative and celebratory harmonies. This sets a tone of hope and spiritual awakening for the album.
The title track, “Makarapapa,” is a rhythmic centerpiece driven by drums and piano keys that create a comfortable, grounding groove. Job’s grainy, deep voice soars with steady conviction, accompanied by harmonies that blend effortlessly. The brass section, introduced in the bridge, subtly impacts the texture with its rich and lounging vivacity.
In “Huna Dzina,” Job takes on a more contemplative tone. His soulful delivery, here, is balanced by vibrant harmonies that echo his heartfelt lines, adding depth and warmth to the track. The album concludes with “Naha Thothe,” enriched by euphonious harmonies that seem to transcend earthly confines and swoon the listener. The high flute tones in the bridge in the bridge make the song even more wistful and whimsical.
Job Madilonga’s journey started with church and matured through years of dedication. He is known to collaborate with Nelson Moloi, Paul Mabalo, and Musa, who enrich his sound and blossom his solo spirit. Listen to Makarapapa to undergo a spiritual journey, a celebration of life, and offer yourself to love and faith.
