Houston-based producer and singer-songwriter Sean Holshouser, known by his stage name Re.s, dropped his latest single “me” on April 15th, 2024. Recorded entirely in his home studio, this dark pop track dives into the all too well-known struggles of adulthood, along with its frustration, until they finally find reinvention.
“me” opens with haunting, brooding melodies that set the immersion for the singer’s hypnotic vocal delivery. The tension in Holshouser’s voice, coupled with sharp, sincere lyricism, pulls listeners into a reflective and introspective mood. Thumping drums and sparkling cymbals create an atmospheric backdrop as Re.s’s whispery, breathy vocals glide over the track, giving it a hypnotism that intensifies as the song progresses. The minimalist yet bustling rhythm section and eerie soundscape enhance the atmosphere, drawing you in further.
Lyrically, “me” is a venting process, getting behind the inadequacy and self-esteem issues that build up over time as adults often fail to spark a change in career paths. After a decade of struggles and contrivances of reinventing himself, this single stands as a cathartic expression of Re.s’s churning frustrations and his success of finally having made it out of the blues.
Inspired by dark pop artists like Billie Eilish, Sub Urban, Porter Robinson, and Madeon, “me” exudes raw emotion with sleek production. Check out the relatable art piece on Spotify.
