If you thought Gothic rock was buried in the past with eyeliner and fog machines, Lyterian’s new single “Monument” might just make you think again, and then hit replay. Hailing from Limerick, this rising Irish trio is carving out a space of their own with a fresh and hauntingly familiar sound. As the lead single from their upcoming debut album Monument, this track crashes in with cathedral-sized emotion and atmosphere.
From the first beat, you’re hit with booming drums courtesy of Kate O’Shaughnessy. Liquid-clear guitars swirl around in dreamy layers, and Brandon Ryan’s syncopated bass lines throb like a second heartbeat. Then comes Sam O’Shaughnessy’s thick, tender voice, soaked in ache, slipping in soft and vulnerable, only to rise with a ghostliness. His vocals carry dreariness that wraps you in a nostalgic fog. The harmonies echo like distant cries in a cathedral. The chorus, on the other hand, opens up and shimmers.
Lyterian tapped Mark Saunders, the guy who’s worked with The Cure, Depeche Mode, and Siouxsie and the Banshees, to mix the track. Now everything is dripping with intention, from the moody synth layers to the wailing harmonies that seem to reach out from some lost place in time.
“We really wanted something heavier, dripping with feeling,” says Sam. Mission accomplished. Listen to “Monument” by Lyterian on Spotify and stay tuned for the upcoming album.
