“More than God,” the latest single from Cashavelly’s upcoming album Meditation Through Gunfire, is a deeply evocative track with a strong message produced by David Wimbish. The song’s sonics create a rich backdrop for Cashavelly’s commanding, luscious, and touching vocals. Mastered by Chris Athens, this track highlights Cashavelly’s distinct blend of storytelling and powerful musicality.
“More than God” begins with a slow, anticipatory rhythm that feels like a swelling, cascading gush of air. Cashavelly’s lush, soulful voice cuts through, hooking the listener with its gorgeous tones as the lyrics explore the addictive nature of a youthful, intoxicating love that fades away just as quickly. Her haunting line, “You snorted me like white powder and disappeared,” paints an unforgettable image of how men’s fleeting intensity leaves a trail of emotional and physical destruction in its wake.
The instrumental arrangement swells with building layers of rumbling rhythm and strumming guitar before a cinematic orchestral expansion sweeps us into the emotional depth of the song. In the bridge, the music reaches a powerful crescendo, with Cashavelly’s voice crooning and harmonizing in a way that feels both ethereal and charged with emotion.
The accompanying music video, directed by James Wiley, adds a striking visual narrative that underscores the themes of objectification and performative femininity. The dance choreography shows women smiling while being watched by a man; their constant, smeared smiles and their outfits, dressed to please, symbolize the forced expectations of women in relationships. Other scenes depict her as the girl next door baking again with that same unsettling smile for her neighbor before he fetches her almost immediately like a man’s fantasy. This visually represents the selfless sacrifice that often comes with these gendered dynamics.
The album, set for release on October 18, 2024, through UNCSA Media, promises to be a strong feminist and egalitarian message, drawing from influences from powerful artists like Fleetwood Mac. So definitely stay tuned for the big release.
