Blindness and Light’s latest release, “My Rolex Is Better Than Yours,” immerses listeners in a dystopian indie electronica enlightenment stemming from a first-hand experience.
The song, released on December 7, unfolds with a mysterious and suspenseful atmosphere, featuring glinting plucking sounds that gradually build to shimmering oscillations. A distinctive element of the track is the robotic voice samples, subliminally providing definitions for words like “hubris” and “egotist,” followed by the repeated declaration, “My Rolex is better than yours.” This repetition, stemming from a real-life incident in a North Wales pub where two Rolex owners engaged in a heated argument, serves as the thematic anchor for the song.
As the song progresses, it delves into synth-laden textures, creating an immersive sonic landscape. The rhythmic development leads to a pounding section with drums towards the conclusion, adding dynamic depth to the composition.
An interesting facet of “My Rolex Is Better Than Yours” is that it was entirely created on a laptop. While we understand how affordable the making was for the artist, we also comprehend the artist has what it takes to create something so intriguing and meaningful from scratch with a DIY approach. The track was crafted by Colin M Potter and produced by Tony Denmade. This experimental piece not only explores the sonic possibilities within the indie electronica genre but also reflects on societal obsessions and conflicts through its unique narrative inspiration.
