LA-based German Alt-R&B singer, Madeleine Rauch, unveils an emotionally charged and anguished narrative in her latest single, “On My Mind.” What is essentially about an on-again, off-again situationship, Rauch taps into the emotional turmoil that a lot of us have undergone, with a really sophisticated soundtrack.
Produced by Josh Jacobson (known for his work with Laufey) and Jordan Sherman (One Republic), “On My Mind” opens with a haunting, muffled piano rippling forth a melancholic and introspective tone. Rauch’s vocals are high, husky, and drenched in vulnerability, as if she’s trapped in a fog of frustration and longing. Her delivery feels deeply personal, inviting listeners to enter the haze of emotional confusion she describes. The electronic glitchy effects pair well with the mood.
The lyrics are relatable and engaging, but poetic and deep. Rauch expertly shifts between slow, intimate moments and hookier parts to highlight the ebb and flow of her emotions that tire us during heartbreak.
The subtle introduction soon gives way to a more catchy rhythm as the song unfolds dynamically between reflective verses and an engaging chorus. In the verses, she lyrically processes the disappearance of her lover, enveloping listeners in a tranquil, contemplative daze. The chorus, by contrast, with arpeggiated bass lines and harmonies lends the song a modern edge.
Visually, the music video mirrors the song’s emotional tone and delivers stunning, artistic shots that enhance the aesthetic experience of “On My Mind.” Check it out on Spotify.
