Only the Surface by Saint Pierre is Trap music, 80s R&B, Lo-Fi, and Experimental. With three tracks that bring a motivational story to the table, Saint Pierre’s bold and fierce artistry shines through in this engaging musical experience.
Only the Surface kicks off with “On Ice,” where sharp, glitzy synth waves intertwine with electrifying beats, creating a shimmery ambiance. Saint Pierre has a deep voice and raps it with a winded or exhausted intonation. It’s like he is trying to vocally show how tired he is of “backstabbers” and how it’s got him on ice, another way of saying he’s heartless now.
“Like Me,” the second track, introduces a relaxing undercurrent with glitzy electronic textures. The narrative revolves around the transformation in people’s behavior when they witness your success. The lyrics, particularly “Now they cross the room to say hi to me,” vividly express the shift in dynamics, creating a relatable theme among those of us who have struggled hard to come this far. The music provides an atmospheric backdrop, enhancing the storytelling.
Closing Only the Surface is “2DC,” a track that exudes smoothness and relaxation. The minimalistic musical arrangement allows Saint Pierre’s vocals to take center stage, pulsing the song with his unique rhythm. His delivery is emphatic, moving, sassy, and sultry, adding layers of expression to the overall vibe. The soulful vocals and minimalistic beats make this track catchy and memorable.
