Dan Kassel’s Ornament is a mesmerizing showcase of his cellist talents in a masterful wrap of genres. Known for his innovative use of live-looping technology, Kassel creates intricate soundscapes, turning his cello into a one-man orchestra. Each track on the album reveals a different dimension of his artistry, as he pushes the boundaries of traditional cello playing by incorporating improvisational and rhythmic elements.
Ornament opens with a soothing yet groovy piece, “Languidity.” The song builds slowly, starting with warm, catchy chords, before percussion enters with a soft, rhythmic tap. Strings gently weave in and out. The interplay between the deep and light tones of the strings adds to the natural, calming vibe while maintaining a subtle energy that invites a light sway or dance.
“Mystic” begins with deep, rich, gravelling string tones layered together, evoking a sense of mystery and wonder. The strings churn and swirl, creating an almost smoky, ethereal atmosphere. A higher-pitched melody swirls and emanates an Eastern smoke, while the sharp jingling percussion leaves us in suspense. The combination of the grounded strings and airy accents transports the listener to a mystical, far-off place.
“Higher” takes a more rhythmic approach with its catchy groove and tapping percussion around which the string swells. Closing the album on a powerful note, “Thrive” carries a brooding intensity with its thumping, grounded groove. The cello leads with deep, resonant tones, and the momentum of the song makes it impossible not to nod along.
Ornament is an extraordinary album that proves that all elements of music have their own voices and freedom to explore. Listen to Dan Kassel’s album on Spotify.
