Alex Beck’s “Over and Out” is a vaporous indie pop gem that captures the feeling of wanting to let go and move on, yet the anger and bitterness are all that you are hung up on. It’s relatable, to say the least. Mostly–it’s bangable! Definitely something I would hit the repeat button on. The music’s giving teen rock sounds. It’s also giving Olivia Rodrigo. The song’s gritty guitar riff, broody percussion, and low, thick timbre provide a groovy soundscape that is sure to get you bopping your head and jamming all over.
Beck’s vocals are equally charming, effortlessly riding the melody with a smooth and confident delivery. It’s perfectly in line with the tempo. Though it only rides up in the chorus, the tempo is kept consistent throughout the song. Her voice blurring up creates a sense of doom and overpowering frustration, as portrayed in the lyrics. As for the lyrics, they are simple yet impactful in their message.
Beck portrays self-denial over the fact that she does care in the first verse (“so what, I am fine/ It’s not like I think about you all the time”), and crafts a dramatic irony with the chorus subsequently (“I wish I could say I was over and out”). With the situational juxtaposition, Beck illustrates one of the very first stages of breakup—which are often the hardest. Though they are hard, this song is a testament that this is just a phase, and we have all gone through them and survived them.
Overall, “Over and Out” is a gritty alternative rock track that showcases Alex Beck’s knack for crafting infectious rock-pop songs with heart and soul. With Beck reflecting on her breakup with her fuming frustration, it’s a perfect addition to any scorching summer playlist and a testament to the power of angry and hurt music.
