Over U by Saint Celebrity: Review
The Bristol rock band Saint Celebrity blurs the line between 80s pop ballad and punk rock with their latest post-breakup anthem ‘Over U’.
Saint Celebrity portrays infatuation, fake promises, change of heart, inevitable heartbreak and getting over it by recalling it all to let it out in this one-of-a-kind pop-punk ballad. The vocals, filled with a swooning infatuation, are set off by the ethereal synths, which reminisce about a time when everything was perfect. Just like the naive romance it portrays, the song gets you hooked from the very first note with the nostalgic sound that is deeply engraved in so many of our minds and comes crashing down again and again with its hard-hitting drums and the crisp distorted guitars like tidal waves with its fiery chorus.
The nostalgia factor plays a big role in this song as it brings back not just one but two different eras in its sound and creates its own place in the modern pop-punk soundscape. Blending the blunt no-bullshit lyricism of pop-punk with the storytelling of ballads in a lyrical theme that is so universal gives it an instant post-breakup anthem status. You don’t really have to be going through a breakup to enjoy this beautiful tune. So why don’t you let the sound take you back to you the time of bead necklaces, tie-dye shirts, and baggy trousers with Vans?
