Overwhelmingly Positive by That Darn Racket is raw, grungy, emotional rock wrapped in sarcasm, soul-searching, and vulnerability that hits like a sucker punch. Led by longtime internet personality Peter Coffin and produced by his brother Patrick Coffin (of Appalachian Anarchy), this debut full-length, released July 20, 2025, kicks the fence down entirely.
From the first track, โPretty Please,โ itโs clear weโre in for something bold and tongue-in-cheek. With grinding guitars and frantic drums, Coffinโs husky vocals blast through lyrics that reek of entitlement, maybe satirical, maybe not. He sings about the narratorโs name being highlighted, concealing those who work behind the scenes. For all I know, it sounds pretty much like he is hinting at the music industry and how stars become the whole brand for their music that takes a whole team to produce.
Then we have โFrom A Mile Awayโ and โMothโฆ Or?โ cutting in like emotional sucker punches, diving into the messy realities of abusive relationships and being there for someone with addiction.
โAbout Faceโ calls out performative apologies and empty change, something too many of us recognize in the digital age. But itโs โPonyโ that really gets under your skin, with paced beats that sync you in its rhythm and its slithering guitar grind. Those lyrics will catch you offguard but more importantly the slyness in that sharp deep voice will get you trembling in need of some actionโฆof that kind. The song has 12k plays on Spotify for a reason.
And then thereโs the title track, โOverwhelmingly Positive.โ Ironic, raw, and explosive, itโs a song about masking unhappiness, smiling through the pain, and burying resentment deep enough that it starts to rot. The riffs grind, the voice soars, and the honesty hits home hard.
This is a dirt-under-the-fingernails, truth-spitting rock album for 2025. Gritty, grunge-tinged, full of heart and jagged edges, That Darn Racket brings back the soul of rock with Overwhelmingly Positive.
