With her new single “PAPERCUTS” released on October 17, 2024, Echos continues her journey of self-recovery, giving fans another glimpse into her upcoming album, set to release in January 2025. Known for her openness about mental health and trauma, Echos uses this track to explore the scars left by a toxic relationship.
“PAPERCUTS” begins with an ethereal acapella, showcasing Echos’ tender, haunting vocals. High harmonies drift around her voice, creating a penumbra of melancholy. As the song progresses, soft drums and echoing instrumentals intensify, supporting her vulnerable lyrics with a delicate yet expansive soundscape. Halfway through, gritty guitar riffs and pounding drums surge, building a restrained tension until the climactic final chorus, where Echos’ voice soars above the instrumentals in a cathartic release.
The lyrics capture the lingering pain of emotional wounds: “Oh, I feel the papercuts, never going deep enough… The way you leave just fucks me up.” She examines the conflicting desire for connection amid the ache of unresolved hurt, likening these small, repeated injuries to papercuts—painful yet not enough to end the relationship. As she reflects, “It stings but it’s not deep enough / I keep cleaning up the blood,” the track becomes an emotional testament to the complexity of moving on from a love that causes as much harm as it brings comfort.
Having collaborated with huge artists like Illenium and Seven Lions, Echos has amassed over 200 million streams globally. Through “PAPERCUTS” and her forthcoming album, she hopes to reach others navigating similar struggles with a shoulder to lean on.
