Jody Prewett brings you the best of folk enchantment with his latest album, River Songs released Jun 21, 2024.
With Jody Prewett and Emily Maguire, the album comes very close to a live performance as it fulfils the purity and transience of summer of the recording on the banks of the Avon at New Cut Studios, Bristol and The Vineyards, Bath.
River Songs begins with the enchanting, curving shimmer of steely chords that pluck and strum like sunlight flickering through the trees. Prewett’s thick, heavy voice comes through, making us warm from the inside. As he sings, “Always knew it would be evergreen,” we feel as though the third song, “On the Road to Evergreen” is being recalled. This song has this brotherhood vibe and the music is fittingly more sincere with his voice grave and his lyrics all coming together like an epic piece of adventure.
“To the Waterfall” has a catchy rhythm that heaves and releases, while he wails a sombre call to surrender to the flow of life renewing a better chapter. “Old House” will get you imagining a life away from the rustle as Prewett sings of an “Old house down by the sea” and the soothing mundane life in it.
Finally, “River Song” wraps up River Songs as it gives the piano the upper hand as it gently, but deeply gushes through the song. His voice reaches a falsetto as he sings. Then with lyrics, metaphor-laden and symbolic, he sings of a love “overdue.” Emily Maguire sings under his voice, which gives us just the right amount of wispy, high, softness in the music.
It turns out that Jody Prewett will be writing more music and performing very soon. So stay tuned!
