Quenta sings out a break-up ballad while spinning out the nuances of the fading embers of love in his latest single, “Roughly Speaking,” the lead track from their debut album Eyes Don’t Lie.
Produced by Nathan Ridley, the song opens with a unique slow-burning sensation. Glinting taps frolics and wispily sparks like snowflakes, amidst which glitching flourishes meet haunting piano. They create a sense of nervous anticipation.
Upon that melody comes the vocalist grounding his voice with a deep, gravelly drawl laced with aching sincerity. He portrays a connection that’s slowly slipping away with his lyrics. The vibrato in his voice demonstrates the pain of his memories.
The singer sings of the hope for his current relationship only to find that he is walking down this path again with another relationship failing. His voice trails as he unveils the breakup with his verses. However, it takes on a hint of optimism. He reaches for a higher register with his head voice, showing us the perspective he found in the face of heartbreak. This way, the song accurately describes the loss that eventually subsides with time.
With King Krule, Prince, and Tom Waits as his influences, any fan of theirs must love Quenta’s music. With “Roughly Speaking,” the band promises raw emotions, captivating storytelling, and a slow, evocative sound. With their debut album on the horizon, Quenta is a duo to keep an eye on.
