Carlos Ucedda’s “Secret Relief” is a powerful and disturbing exploration of addiction, released on June 26, 2024. Ucedda gives you synth-wave, 80s nostalgia pop, and dark wave all merged to provide a very self-aware song.
“Secret Relief” opens with a sense of unease. Blurry whispers and a tense ticking create a chilling atmosphere, punctuated by haunting vocalizations. This establishes the secrecy and shame often associated with addiction. As the music builds, Ucedda’s vocals take center stage. Their deep, aching voice is filled with agonizing passion and pain as they convey the emotional turmoil of the protagonist.
The music throbs with a pulsating energy, mirroring the protagonist’s internal struggle. String arrangements theatrically express the melancholy. Meanwhile, the thumping drums pound steadily to increase the intensity. Then the guitars come gnarling and revving grittily. Haunting harmonies intertwine with Ucedda’s soaring vocals, further emphasizing the depth of his despair.
The accompanying music video, with its foggy, haunting backdrop, reinforces the song’s themes. Ucedda, clad in a dramatic yellow cocoon-like garment and a netmask, portrays a figure trapped and consumed by addiction. His movements, resembling a desperate struggle to break free, perfectly visualize the protagonist’s yearning for “secret relief.”
Ucedda has got his inspo from the Thompson Twins, David Bowie, and Depeche Mode. And if you know any better and love these artists’ sounds, “Secret Relief” is totally for you.
