Mortal Prophets brings back classic American songwriting from the heart of Tin Pan Alley with its history, baggage, and leftovers with their latest EP, Sleeping In My Bed. Helmed by songwriter John Beckmann, this collection of tracks offers a nostalgic yet contemporary mood found in no other record.
Produced and mixed by William D. Lucey at LeftBank Studio in Cork, Ireland, Sleeping In My Bed opens with the heavy rumbling beats and shimmering currents of “Bury Them Deep,” oozing the cinematism with a foreboding. Meanwhile, Beckmann’s contemplative vocals and soulful harmonies bring a spine-chilling edge.
“Sleeping In My Bed,” the titular track, exudes a sense of nostalgia and longing. With relaxing guitar strumming and bluesy backbeats, interlaced with horns and organ, the song buzzes like a fever. Beckmann’s tender and sultry vocals lay his heart out with an unforgettably vulnerable vibrato.
“Hell or High Water” takes a darker turn with stereo-panned ominous guitar strumming. Whereas, the harmonica wails like hot air blows in a lone desert. The lyrics speak of obsessive desire and unwavering commitment, underscored by the relentless thump of the beat.
Sleeping In My Bed culminates with “Cut You Down,” a suspenseful and urgent track that delves into the inevitability of downfalls with a rush sounding as though you are being chased. Glassy beats and a cold atmosphere create a sense of unease, while Beckmann’s refrain drives home the uncomfortable message of the song.
Listen to Sleeping In My Bed by Mortal Prophets to be transported to lands long gone.
