Julianna Joy released her debut album Somebody Call the Firemen! this July 25, 2025. With almost 30k monthly listeners on Spotify and three singles already stirring up the Los Angeles alternative-pop circuit (“Goldstar,” “The Year I Lived as You,” and “Better”), Joy has built a buzz that’s hard to ignore. Produced under the mentorship of Teddy Geiger, the project has all the makings of a defining indie release this summer.
Opening track “Weatherman” sets the mood with delicate vocals that ride high and soft over punchy, thick instrumentals. The playful rhythm makes the song immediately ear-catching, a mix of lightness and bite that frames her voice beautifully. Fast forward to track five, “Lodestar (God’s Dead),” and Joy dives into darker waters. Built on off-kilter rhythms and heavy beats, her performance unfolds in stops and starts, matching the introspection in her lyrics. She drifts from a hazy head voice to falsettos all over, very effortlessly, keeping the song flowing and rippling while imbuing every line with dreary urgency.
“Cause we all hate each other like people do but it’s worse than I am used to/ Is it all figurative or is it just life, is there a reason for hope…” she sings, calling out the collective misery and absorbing it all.
Then there’s “The Year I Lived as You,” sitting at track eight, which already has more than 14k plays on Spotify. It’s one of the album’s catchiest cuts, glistening with lush melodies that flow under her softer tones. The song pulses with passion, Joy’s vocals swelling with conviction while the instrumentation keeps everything dynamic.
Altogether, Somebody Call the Firemen! is the indie spark plug of the season. Listen to it on Spotify.
