Manningtree, Essex, UK singer-songwriter, Rob Prince is singing us tales by the bonfire with his latest album, Telling Tall Tales, released this June 7. You are getting indie pop, funk, Irish folk, and classic Britpop in 7 tracks. Produced, mixed, and mastered by AJ from Black Cactus Studios, the album showcases Prince’s multi-instrumental prowess and his knack for evocative storytelling.
Telling Tall Tales kicks off with the upbeat and engaging “Ballerina.” Prince’s deep, thick voice delivers an earnest tale of love at first sight with angsty passion. The catchy instrumentals immediately draw you in, making it impossible not to tap your feet along with the rhythm.
A dramatic shift in mood, “My Baby Don’t Care For Me” thrives on contrasts. With its theatrical bluesy funk vibe and mock moodiness, Prince’s hypnotic refrains build to high-energy, frantic peaks with shimmering strumming guitars, creating a dynamic listening experience and a frustrating relativity.
“Banned from the Bar” is a lively Irish folk tune that demands a sing-along. Prince’s enthusiastic vocals tell the humorous story of a notorious drunkard, “Robbie”(satirizing himself!) banned from his local pub. The energetic backing vocals and Jen from JenTones’ violin undercurrent turn this into a rollicking pub anthem.
“Head in the Sand” stands out with its high free reed trails and sexy, charismatic laid-back delivery. The punchy groove underpins a folk-rock narrative about the busy lives we lead and forgetting the present reality. The seventh and last track is a radio edit of this song, offering the same captivating experience in a more censured format.
